Accessing results

Click on Data and Results on the sidebar. Under Canadian data or International data, click on the link to the international Random data selector, which resides on the UK project site. Then follow the instructions to obtain a random sample of results.

You won’t have this problem if you download the results directly to a spreadsheet program instead of trying to copy and paste. The View results link is intended only for viewing in HTML, not for copying and pasting. We offer the class results in two downloadable formats: Excel, or the generic CSV (comma-separated values) format, which can be opened in most common spreadsheet programs.

Click on Learning activities and read Tips for using class data. Check out the classroom-ready activities. You can print and use them or download them and adapt them to your needs.

Project requirements

We expect that teachers usually inform their principal of special class projects that they undertake. We suggest that you ask your principal to read the Letter to the principal, so that he or she will be informed of the project and may propose it to other teachers in your school.

We pride ourselves on keeping all collected data confidential. Please read our privacy statement.

Get in touch with your local association of home-schooling families. We suggest that one contact person be responsible for registering your association. On the Teachers page, at First time user, the contact person enters your association’s postal code, then its contact co-ordinates, then his or her own ‘teacher’ co-ordinates. The contact person receives the teacher password by e-mail, which allows him or her to register two groups or ‘classes’, one elementary and one secondary. These classes include all the home-schooled students in your area. The contact-person chooses a grade level that best represents the students in the group.

The contact-person then:

sends the class ID and class password to the other participating families
asks each family to respond to the questionnaire by a specified deadline
retrieves the class results after the deadline and sends them to all participating families.

It’s up to you whether to send the Letter to parents or caregivers home with your students. We encourage you to inform parents about your class’ online survey.

The project is designed so that individual teachers can register their classes and access their results. For a school-wide activity, a project manager could be appointed to help individual teachers set up and conduct their own class surveys. The teachers could submit their class results to the project manager, who would compile them into an all-school spreadsheet and prepare a report. The students could then work with school-wide data as well as class results.

Ask students to complete the online survey at home as homework. Or consider doing the class survey by hand without contributing to the national data.

You might consider asking students to complete the online survey at home as homework.

Or you could do the survey by hand without contributing to the national data. Go to Survey questions on the left sidebar and print out the questionnaire for the students to complete by hand.

The questionnaire for elementary students has questions in common with the questionnaire for secondary students. But both also have some different questions adapted to each age group. For example, younger students are asked about their pets and whether they have allergies and older students are asked about their levels of smoking.

Registering your classes

Please choose the grade level that represents the largest number of students in your class.

Each school year we create a new database, so you need to register your participating class(es) again every year. You can create the same class name and password if you want, but the system will provide you with a new class ID number for this year.

From the Teachers page, click on Sign in and enter your e-mail address and teacher password. Under Registered classes, click on the link for the class ID and then make the changes you want to the profile. The ID number itself cannot be changed.

Please change the class password after all your students have completed the survey, to make sure that they don’t contribute more responses.

Contact us for more information.

You make up and enter a class name to identify the group: for example, ‘7b math.’

You create a class password, such as ’stars,’ for your students to use to access the online questionnaire.

The system will automatically generate the class ID, which students will also use to access the online questionnaire.

Teacher registration

Make sure you are entering the correct e-mail address or password.

If you have more than one e-mail address, enter the one you registered with us and that we used to send you your teacher password.

Make sure you are entering your correct Census at School teacher password. If you have forgotten your teacher password, submit your e-mail address under Forgot your teacher password? and we’ll send it to you again.

Yes.  For now, we do not have the teacher database from previous years.

Before you submit your teacher information, you can click in the box beside the Note: If you DO NOT wish to receive such information, please check here.

Make sure you are entering the postal code of your school and not of your home address.

If your school is new, please enter full contact co-ordinates under Register your school.

Spelling errors will not prevent you from registering, but if you wish, you can contact us to advise us of the correction. However, if the name of your school or municipality, or the school’s postal code, has recently changed, please provide full contact co-ordinates under Register your school.

Please provide the contact co-ordinates where it is easiest to get in touch with you. We will send you occasional information by e-mail about the Census at School project and other learning resources.
